Deviousness |
I remember my first doll lightsaber--a long thin scrap of lucite from the wastebasket in our school's Industrial Arts class; some guy had sawn it off the edge of a plaque he was making.
I grew up in the Sixties when there weren't nearly so many interesting toys, and I didn't WANT my Barbie to go to the dance with Ken; I wanted her to command spaceships, fight sword duels with evil knights, hunt wild animals with a stone knife, be mummified in a pyramid with all her grave-goods.... So I had to make a lot of my own toys, or use things that were made for other purposes. Every Goodwill store and five-and-dime knew me by sight, I was in there so often.
These days, when I have money and energy, I run a little toy business at conventions, providing those kinds of adventure toys for people's Barbies and GI Joes, and since a lot of kids can't afford the $5-12 for a good 6" lightsaber, I also sell cheap versions made from swizzle sticks or dollar-store paintbrush handles. Toys are where you find them, and half the fun is showing kids where to find their own.
